Title of Position: Internship in biological reserach, sustainable agriculture, and conservation in the Peruvian Amazon
Website:

https://www.sustainableamazon.org/

Name of Company/Organization: Alliance for a Sustainable Amazon
Location: 7224 Boscastle Lane
Hanover, Maryland 21076
Job Description:

The Alliance for a Sustainable Amazon (ASA) is seeking interns to assist its international team of biologists and conservationists with various projects spanning biological research and monitoring, sustainable tropical agriculture, and conservation.

LENGTH OF STAY: 4, 8 or 12 weeks
DATES: Rolling basis starting May 27, 2019
LOCATION: Peru, Madre de Dios region.
WEBSITE: https://www.sustainableamazon.org/peruvian-amazon-internships-2019

We have three Internship Programs designed to provide individuals—students, early-career or aspiring scientists, and/or those with a deeper interest in tropical biology or conservation—with the chance to learn through direct, hands-on engagement in basic scientific research and applied conservation projects.

Each of our three Internship Programs share a common academic structure that includes an exploration of topics in tropical biology and conservation through hands-on activities and skills-building exercises, readings and guided discussions of the primary scientific literature and in-depth independent study.

Skills developed by interns:
● Training and practice in basic field research skills, including off-trail navigation and use of GPS and GIS, techniques used in studies of tropical biodiversity, ecology, and conservation (e.g., experimental design, data collection, management, and analysis, forest inventory plots, tree climbing and canopy access, wildlife and insect survey methods, camera trapping, etc.)
● Identification of major Amazonian plant and animal groups (e.g., trees, mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians, insects and other invertebrates)
● Sustainable tropical agriculture methods and best practices
● Weekly assigned readings on topics covering tropical biology, sustainable development, and conservation
● Guided reading discussions from the primary scientific literature
● Advanced field research methodology through in-depth Independent Research Project

Interns will contribute to ASA´s various projects in the field through hands-on participation. Ongoing projects for 2019 include the following:
● Biological inventories - Butterflies (hand nets and baited traps), birds (weekly point count surveys and opportunistic sightings), mammals (camera traps), herpetofauna (reptiles & amphibians; nocturnal surveys).
● Butterfly biology - Searching potential host plants for immatures (eggs and caterpillars) and rearing immatures to adulthood in the field laboratory.
● Plant phenology - Weekly surveys for timing of fruiting and flowering of select rain forest tree and plant species, as well as the addition of new species to the project protocol.
● Cacao agroforestry - Growing cacao (source of chocolate) as part of a diverse agroforestry system, incorporating native food, medicine, and fiber plants into the system.
● Environmental education - We are working to create awareness of environmental issues and foster an environmentally-conscious society in the southern Peruvian Amazon. Our environmental education projects focus mostly on elementary and high school children in Madre de Dios, Peru.

Independent research

Interns staying 8-12 weeks (Advanced & Academic Quarter programs) have the option of completing an in-depth independent research project on a topic of their choosing that is aligned with the ASA`s research priorities, under the guidance of ASA faculty. This allows interns to build upon what they learn at the beginning of the program and apply it to a project in an area that is novel or interesting to them. Topics may also be assigned in an area of our faculty’s academic expertise, including wildlife biology and ecology, entomology, botany, natural history, sustainable tropical agriculture, and community development.
Past interns have completed a variety of projects, including the construction of artificial macaw nest boxes, inventories of rain forest carbon stocks, and diagnostic surveys in local communities, among others. Follow this link to view published interns research reports: www.sustainableamazon.org/publications

Required/Preferred: An academic background or strong interest in biology, ecology, agriculture, or conservation is highly recommended. We do not offer academic credit through our organization, but we are happy to work with your home institution so that interns may gain credit. All instruction at the site is in English. Although Spanish is not required, at least basic skills are useful.

Job Description:

Come be a part of an innovative new equine practice. We are looking for 1-2 equine vets that have a desire to provide high quality medicine. These positions are for part time or full time veterinarians. We are looking for team members that want to have a work life balance that allows them to pursue passions other than veterinary medicine.

According to a recent study, a majority of new graduate equine veterinarians leave equine practice within 5 years. The reason is always the same, work life balance and money. This practice is the first step in reversing that trend. Come join a practice that is not only concerned with you and equine vets in general, but that is also doing something about it.

This is an unconventional practice that will allow a tremendous amount of freedom to enjoy life to the fullest. This position is great for a new grad or a seasoned practitioner that has learned that there is more to life than working 24 hours per day seven days per week.

This position requires you to be on call nights and weekends in an ambulatory equine practice setting. In exchange for being on call you will have EVERY weekday off. Coming to work for us means that you will get a salary and not have any quotas to fill or metrics to meet. If you join us there will be no more invasions on your personal time because when you are not on call you will not have any client responsibilities.

Kindness Animal Hospital in Grand Forks, ND is searching for a motivated and caring associate veterinarian to join our team of dedicated and passionate veterinary professionals. Our practice is progressive and very well equipped. We focus on individual animal care and preventative medicine. We also provide advanced medical, dental, and surgical care including orthopedics and receive referrals from many of our surrounding practices.

Kindness Animal Hospital was established in 1985 and we moved into a new facility in May of 2011. The new hospital has 6 spacious exam rooms, a large centralized treatment/ICU area, and separate canine and feline hospitalization wards. Our surgery suite has 2 heated electric tables, new VetLand EX3000 anesthesia machines, and LED lighting from Medical Illumination. The dental suite has 2 wet tables with Progeny digital dental x-ray and 2 air driven dental machines. Our laboratory includes the complete Idexx Laboratory suite including Catalyst blood chemistry, ProCyte CBC, VetLyte, UA analyzer, SNAPShot, and SNAPPro. Category: Internship
Title of Position: Veterinary Intern
Website: https://www.animalcarecenters.net/
Name of Company/Organization: Aminal Care Center
Location:

Cincinnati, Ohio

Job Description:

The Animal Care Centers of Cincinnati, Ohio would like to extend an opportunity for 4 new (or recent) graduates to participate in one of the best-kept secrets in veterinary medicine.

We have the longest running, most successful small animal general practice internship in the country. Our interns have come from schools all over the country with varying levels of experiences, yet were able to achieve full competency in all areas of general practice because of our internship. After 1 year, many say they have exceeded their own expectations. Our  senior practitioners feel that you compare to a doctor with 5 years of  experience and we have many intern testimonials to support this!

It takes 2 things to master your craft – no matter what it is. It takes great instruction as well as the opportunity to practice your craft enough until it is mastered. If you don’t get good instruction but have lots of practice, it’s possible that you are making the same mistakes repeatedly. If you get great instruction but little practice, your newly taught skills will deteriorate. This is why our internship program has proven to be so successful: we have a team of experienced mentors that love to teach and coach and a caseload that surpasses many veterinary schools. Our internship program is structured so you know what skills you have been exposed to, what skills you can do with help, and then what skills you have mastered. Our goal is for you to obtain mastery of your veterinary skills. Our mentoring is amazing – see what our previous doctors have said.

You will be given the opportunity to manage your own cases (with help, if needed) and perform every surgery in which excellent general practitioners should be expected to be competent. You will be given the skills to command top dollar at your next position because you will be experienced and competent.

And, there is no obligation or expectation that you stay beyond your year – although some interns have opted to do so because our business is made up of great people and management who love what they do. We have an amazing staff.
